About the Archive

The Mark Morris Dance Group Archive Project was awarded funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2016. This phase of the project built on previous work also funded by the Mellon Foundation in 2014 to conduct an Archive Assessment and create a preliminary inventory of the MMDG Archives. The goals of the 2016-2019 Archive Project were to ensure the preservation of the collection by digitizing endangered and obsolete audiovisual materials and works on paper, and setting up a content management system built on CollectiveAccess that describes and provides access to the Dance Group archives. Additionally, the project aimed to complete inventory and cataloging of the entire collection and to create new oral histories and transcripts of interviews in order to enhance the documentation of MMDG’s legacy.

The next phase of the Archive following the project will be to continue cataloging and preserving new works created by Morris; to enhance descriptive metadata through regular work with content specialists; to curate public digital exhibitions and virtual and in-person programming; and to serve as the repository for Morris’s Dances for the Future legacy project.

The Mark Morris Dance Group Archive is currently managed by Stephanie Neel, Archivist, and Justin Han, Processing Archivist, with regular and invaluable support from volunteers.
