The Brussels Years: Rehearsal at Rue Bara Studios, 1988-1991
Mark Morris Dance Group was based in Brussels, Belgium from September 1988 through 1991, as the Monnaie Dance Group/Mark Morris. They were the company in residence at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie following the departure of Maurice Béjart and his Ballet of the 20th Century. For the first time in their history, the Dance Group had an entire theater at their disposal, which included administrative offices and ample rehearsal space at the nearby Rue Bara Studios. These studios fostered the development of some of the Dance Group's most iconic and large-scale works, beginning with L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato -- which premiered two months after the company arrived, in November 1988 -- and ending with The Hard Nut, in January 1991.
This gallery features a selection of photographs, videos, and various depicting the Dance Group in rehearsal at Rue Bara, including company member snapshots, the South Bank Show's 1990 feature on the Mark Morris Dance Group, and videos of The Hard Nut in various stages of completion.
